Save thousands of dollars and add thousands of hours to your tracks with Larry Lugs

Typically it starts with one damaged lug, the lug breaks off and extra strain is placed on the lugs either side, eventually these fail.

With the high price of a entire new track, you are determined to get as many hours out of the damaged track as you can, so you keep running it, destroying more lugs and potentially damaging your machine. The machine runs less efficiently, and then, mid way through the job the track fails.

Now you are stuck with an unfinished job, an irritated customer, an out of service machine and thousands of dollars for a new track.

Larry Lug Service Plan

With Larry Lugs you could have avoided all this. Larry Lugs allow you to quickly replace damaged lugs before they fail completely. By regularly inspecting your tracks you can identify potential lug failures before they occur.

Every few hundred hours, or with any regular maintenance undertaken, you should inspect all the lugs on your tracks.

There are two types of lug damage, Lug Degradation (pic 1), where the lug is basically chewed away from the top down, and Lug Delamination (Pic 2) where the lug is torn away from the track completely.

Lug Degradation is easily spotted and can start with a small chunk torn out as shown on the second lug in Pic 1 and gradually increases until the lug is useless, or it can occur suddenly when a substantial amount of the lug is torn off.

Lug Delamination can be more difficult to spot in the early stages. As shown in Pic 3 cracks around base of the lug indicate the start of lug delamination.

Its helpful to have a small torch to highlight the base of the lug. If cracks are spotted around the base of the lug, consideration needs to be given to replacing it, at the very least monitor the lug for further deterioration.

Now, with Larry Lugs and regular track inspection you can get potentially thousands of more hours out of your tracks, reduce the likelihood of on job track failure, reduce machine downtime and save thousands of dollars.

Larry Lug Installation

As shown here, installation of Larry Lugs is straight forward.

The lugs are simply bolted onto the track. Once any remnants of the old lug is removed, holes are drilled using the machine specific template and logs bolted on.

A single lug can be replaced in as little as 10 minutes, even with the track still on the machine.

For multiple lug replacement it is recommended that the track is removed

What about Prorata Warranty on tracks

In some cases dealers may now give you limited pro‐rata warranty on tracks that fail early. This option may appear cheaper, however if your track starts to loose lugs at 400hrs and fails at 1200hrs, a warranty track will still cost you more then Larry Lugs and you are still stuck with a track that will most likely drop lugs again at another 400 hours.

Replace an entire track full of lugs and still save money

If at 1200 hours you replaced all the lugs on a track with Larry Lugs, you would be much more likely to realise the full 3000 hour tread life of your tracks, and it would be cheaper then a brand new track.

When you hear that lug pop half way through a job, no longer do you need to weigh up the cost of a brand new track against the risk of running a damaged track for as long as you can to get some value out of it. Larry Lugs are quick and simple to fit and really will improve the running cost of your machine.

Before Larry Lugs

You have a relatively new track, it has about 400hrs on it, you notice slight damage to a number of lugs. Another hundred or so hours you tear off a lug, but there's nothing you can do but keep operating.

Pretty soon the lug next to the missing one is showing signs of extensive degradation, but there's still nothing to be done, so keep running the track. Within another 20 to 30 hours the second lug has been degraded completely and now others are starting to show extensive damage, the track is no longer running smoothly over the drive.

Eventually you are missing 5 or 6 lugs, but still running the track as far as you can. 1200 to 1500 hours there are too many lugs missing for the track to operate properly way through a job and you have no choice but to replace properly, you are half the track, $2,500 and a day or so later, you are back in action.

Since Larry Lugs

Now you have Larry Lugs. You check your machine and tracks regularly. After about 400 hours you notice a lug with cracks around the base, the start of delamination. You keep an eye on it after a while the lug starts to become loose.

Because you're aware of the damaged lug there's no surprise when it pops on a job, but you've got your Larry Lugs on hand so in 10 minutes its replaced and your back on the job.

A few hundred hours further on you notice a couple of other lugs with damage, they are replaced with Larry Lugs as well.

1500 hours and you have 5 or 6 Larry lugs on a track that is going well. At 2000 hours you have 10 or 12 lugs, and by the time the track has run its tread down at around 3000 hours you may have 20 or so Larry Lugs on it.

Time to buy a new track, unbolt all the Larry lugs and keep them on hand for the new track.
